Millions of Honduran children are left out of the education system each year. This is especially true in rural areas, where 1 out of 5 Hondurans live in extreme poverty (less than US$1.90 per day). These conditions hinder access to education and the lack of education then leads to growing poverty. A way to break this cycle is by increasing the coverage of quality education in rural communities.
Once again, Taiwan Sugar Corp. (TaiSugar) and IMPCT Coffee are joining efforts to collaborate on our second school project in a rural community in Honduras. Our team is currently in-country working closely with partners and evaluating potential communities. We want to determine when and where we can better create a meaningful, long-lasting impact.
We are considering sites in Copan, Ocotepeque and Francisco Morazan. The first two Departments are also where TaiSugar buys specialty coffee from small farmers. The latter is where we did our first Honduran school project. With this and every project, we seek to support sustainable models, where there is a shared cost approach that ensures communities, parents and students are making a commitment to education and their future.
