The majority of the families living in Los Izotes 2 are subsistence farmers. This rural community is located in the municipality of Talanga, department of Francisco Morazan. Children here have access to primary school, up to 6th grade. However, there is no secondary school. This means that children would have to walk 3 to 4 hours each day to continue their studies. This leads to children dropping off school to work on the fields and thus, perpetuate the cycle of poverty.
This is why IMPCT Coffee partnered up with Taiwan Sugar Corporation (TaiSugar) and Educate2Envision (E2E) to fund and execute an impactful secondary school program in this community. This collaboration was possible thanks to the alignment of our values. TaiSugar seeks not only to improve trade between Honduran and Taiwan but also create a positive impact in society. E2E has been working in rural Honduras for the past 7 years, opening 8 secondary school centers during that time.
This program we are implementing, provides access to secondary education at an existing classroom currently used for primary school classes. The space will be improved, books, school supplies and uniforms will be provided to the students. Additionally, the program includes leadership and entrepreneurial skills development. It is tailored to the students living in rural Honduras so that they can increase the well-being and economy of their communities.
On our very first meeting with the community, 60 members showed and 25 students signed up. This, to us, indicated a clearly defined need in the community but also a commitment to create the future they want for their children.
Founders with a purple mark have gone above and beyond in their contribution to this project.
