Monica is a mother of 3 who has been educating the community of Colonia Toledo’s children for over 20 years. Her center is called “La Casita de Mónica”, which means Mónica's Little House. Children spend around 8 hours everyday making Monica’s daycare, their second home.
Monica works on her own receiving 20 children from ages 1 to 6. This has developed in all the bigger kids a sense of service because they treat the smaller children as their little brothers and sisters, helping them in whatever they need. Monica’s day isn’t over when the kids leave at noon, additional she has to work in the afternoons giving tutoring classes to bigger kids to be able to sustain the center, as many parents aren’t able to afford the entire tuition of $26.
The daycare is located also where she lives. She has adapted the space into a learning center thanks to several donations from people around the community and Monica’s hard work. Unfortunately, the location was not well adapted for children’s safety and learning development. There were stairs in the playground that had no handrails, making it very stressful for Monica to keep an eye in all of her students while attending others needs. Also, there was a damp problem in almost all the walls and ceilings resulting in bad smell in the entire house and causing even respiratory health problems.
With IMPCT coffee sales, Monica has been able to get Montessori training, have new material to teach, have new chair and tables made out of wood. Now she also counts with a safer and cleaner space for the children, and has a bigger space to double the capacity of the center and soon hire a helper.
Thank you for believing in changing the world through early childhood education.
