Our very first Pilot Playcare in Guatemala. Las Mercedes is located in El Jocotillo known as the place where the best pineapples of the country are grown, about an 1hr30 away from the city. The road is a dirt road and in the winter it can get very messy. Many times making it impossible for the cars to get in, which makes it harder for children to attend school as the walks can get complicated.
The community of Las Mercedes donated a community space where they held their weekly meetings in order for the children to have a nice and stimulating environment.
The improvements were done, and we spent 2 weekends painting, fixing roofs, windows, doors, and getting all the material and desks ready.
We hired the teacher, we trained her, as well as the cook who would prepare nutritious meal for the kids. Unfortunately the demand was not high enough for the Playcare to sustain itself, as many mothers wouldn't take their children to the Playcare.
We decided it was best to give the Playcare back to the community control, where they decided it was best to use it as a space for literacy courses for teenagers.
